CLARINET/EB

Headley Trust Scholar at the Royal College of Music, studying with leading clarinetists. Currently on trial as principal with Manchester Camerata and freelances with ensembles including the BBC Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, and English National Opera.

Ed Pelham

BASS CLARINET/CLARINET

Studied at the Royal College of Music and completed a master’s in Stockholm. Now dedicated to the bass clarinet, he performs with the Hyde Quartet and curates recital programs, alongside orchestral work under conductors such as Vasily Petrenko, Martyn Brabbins, and the late Andrew Davies.

Ellie Kershaw

BASS CLARINET/CLARINET

Graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Headley Trust Scholar at the Royal College of Music. A dedicated music educator, she performs as a chamber musician and has freelanced with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Hannah Shimwell

CLARINET/BASS CLARINET

RCM Master’s student and Wilkins-Mackerras Award holder. Freelances with ensembles including the BBC Symphony and Britten Sinfonia, while also exploring folk traditions and new collaborative projects.

Formed in 2020, the Hyde Quartet is a dynamic ensemble of Royal College of Music students and alumni. Since their debut, the clarinet quartet has gained recognition as winners of the Tunnell Trust Award, the RCM Ensemble Competition, and the Boconnoc Award, as well as finalists in the Royal Overseas League competition.


They have appeared at leading venues including the Royal Albert Hall Elgar Rooms and St Johns Smith Square, and have performed as part of festivals such as the Great Exhibition Road Festival. The quartet has also benefited from mentorship by acclaimed clarinetists Richard Hosford, Timothy Lines, and Peter Sparks.


Dedicated to expanding the clarinet quartet repertoire, the ensemble has premiered commissioned works and continues to collaborate with contemporary composers. Alongside their concert appearances, they are committed to outreach through programs like Deal Music & Arts, inspiring young musicians and sharing the joy of music with new audiences.

As well as performing on stage, the Hyde Quartet is dedicated to sharing music with younger generations. Through the Deal Music & Arts outreach program, they bring live performances into primary schools across southern England, inspiring children to discover and enjoy classical music.
